Punk rock writer Michael Essington, dancers Ashleigh Burgess and Hannah Grigereit of Luminosity Dance Troupe and photographer Dan Sliwa joined Mark and Nicole for quite an eclectic show.
Michael talked about being a teenager in the LA punk scene in the early 80s, how a Bad Religion 7 inch single changed his life and living habits, the difference between punk music then and now, how the death of his father got him to revisit his youth and start writing his column “Mike Check” for strangereaction.com which led to him writing his 2 books Last One to Die and Life Won’t Wait and his upcoming book Born Frustrated.
Ashleigh talked about growing up a cheerleader then transitioning to a hip hop dancer which led her to be featured in a Busta Rhymes video, how versatile Luminosity Dance Troupe is and how they can handle almost any gig from go go dancing, to backing rock bands to a themed murder mystery show, how quickly she can overcome skeptics when teaching a hip hop dancing class, how a tour in Oklahoma led to the crowd joining the dancers on stage, and Luminosity’s upcoming tour of the west coast.
Hannah talked about being born in Montana and looking forward to going back as part of Luminositiy’s upcoming tour, how living in St. Louis led to her opening for rap star Nelly, how she was able to learn ariel acrobatics and trapeze and used that to pass the rigorous audition process to join Luminosity, how she is proficient in fire play and grindcore, she talked about how their first gig in Oklahoma started with an audience member throwing a chair onstage damaging a speaker, and how any guy who asks her to dance in a club better be prepared for a dance battle.
Dan talked about how stumbling on a fetish boudoirs shoot led to him being the official photographer for Luminosity but he and everyone were upstaged by Michael’s 10 year old son calling him on air at the end of the show.
